Slinking along the dark and barren hillside, pack of acquired supplies secured tight, I see movement.
Have I been caught?
I drop low, confident in my darkened outer-wear, and watch the quiet, sprawling city. A flash by the edge reveals an individual stumbling past the barrier, long, unshaven white hair gleaming in the night.
I need to leave before next watch begins, but they fall.
I weigh the risks, and reluctantly return.
“Can you walk?” I ask.
They nod, startled.
“Put this on,” a shawl for their hair.
With sounds of next watch beginning, we disappear into the hillside.

Powerful & immersive scene-setting conveyed in such brevity! Really illustrates the characters and the stakes at risk :)

Thanks Tom! Glad you felt drawn into the action of this piece, though the action was less adventurous and more-so atmospheric.

I like the photo… even without it, you’ve managed to convey the sense of the feeling of the character.
Whatever the word is for trying to look over your shoulder while advancing into an unknown situation …while trying to be un-observable.

This character definitely had a need to remain unseen, glad you felt that. And the photo fit too well to pass up, that’s for sure. Thanks for stopping by, Clark!

The tension is established and we can feel the protagonist’s stakes, what will be lost if caught, and yet a humanitarian drive to not abandoned another in need. Well written.

Thanks Charli! Glad I got the right feel across, it’s always a challenge to do so with 99 words.
